Horseback riding Imagine
cantering through sugar cane plantations, fording thigh-deep rivers,
rounding up cattle and trotting through virgin rain forest on top
of a fine, well bred Paso Fino steed.
Rappelling there is two ways to get up to the rapelling
platform: One of our guide climb up for a rope helping the tourist
that is holding and seating in a chair.
Caño
Negro Small boats close to the water move silently
beneath the overhanging trees, coming up to the birds and monkeys
and lizards without disturbing them.
Comfortable.
Natural. Simple. Family.
Twenty minutes from the bustling Arenal Volcano tourist
town of Fortuna is La Garza. twenty minutes, or one
hundred years.
What began as the weekend retreat for the city friends
of the colonial founders of La Garza has evolved into
a small, intimate hotel for discerning people who really
desire pure escape from the twenty-first century. Like
the farm's founders, you still awaken to the sounds
of the birds and monkeys dwelling on the river bank
in front of your room. You still watch the sunrise hitting
the cone of arenal volcano. And you still cross a swinging
bridge to reach the ranch house to eat breakfast in
a casona (main farm house) built 100 years ago.
It's impossible
to enter our forest without seeing the wildlife, literally
leaping from tree to tree over your head. Standing beneath
the magnificent strangler fig (it was an adult tree
when Columbus arrived in Costa Rica), you start to realize
the meaning of the word "timeless".
Birding clubs have
cataloged more than 160 species here, from the Roseatte
Spoonbill and Northern Jicana to the tiny purple hummingbird.
In the middle of the forest we've built a platform in
the trees on the banks of the forest's main estuary.
Animals come to drink from the estuary below, and your
silent presence doesn't disturb them. Stay an hour or
stay all day; we'll pack a lunch.
Our
restaurant is full-service for our guests, offering
breakfast, lunch, and dinner seven days a week.
With excellent true natural fruit drinks and fresh
farm eggs and local or ocean fish, we serve you
with elegance and style in the open-sided "casona"
of the old farm house. Surprisingly the open sides
are essentially bug-free.
Our
modern, clean, thoughtfully designed guest bungalows
have replaced the older main house rooms. The
river out front invites you outside, to meander
on the banks. Or stay inside, enjoying the flop-flop-flop
of the ceiling fans.
